S.A.G.E was created in 2017 in response to the increasing levels of stress and burnout teachers face.
Educators play a significant role in shaping the lives of children. Not only do we facilitate academic learning, but we also influence a child’s social-emotional development and well-being. We are key influencers of healthy relationships. We help students reach their highest potential and nurture their understanding of who they are and who they can become in the world. Yet, being an educator has become increasingly stressful—a reality that negatively impacts us, students, and school communities alike.
According to a recent survey of 30,000 teachers conducted by the National Federation of Teachers, educators are more stressed than before:
80% of teachers say they feel stressed at work.
70% report not feeling engaged in their work.
8 out of 10 teachers report feeling physically and mentally exhausted at the end of the work day.
Over time, high levels of stress can negatively impact physical, emotional, and mental well-being, which can lead to teacher burnout. In short, we do not do enough to care for, support, and look after educator well-being.
Even though teacher burnout, compassion fatigue, and toxic stress are daily realities, little to no on-site support exists for teachers (and administrators) to de-stress during the day. And, very few professional developments promote self-care, well-being, and/or teach stress-relief strategies to support teaching professionals.
S.A.G.E. fills this gap.
